Playing fiddle for the Haw River Reelers is Wayne Martin from Raleigh. His wife Margaret plays guitar. Joining them are Chapel Hill residents Dwight Rogers, clawhammer banjo, and Gail Gillespie, guitar and mandolin. Wayne and Margaret Martin have been mainstays of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill old-time music scene for over 25 years. Margaret taught herself guitar, banjo and dulcimer in high school. Her expressive singing and powerful guitar playing have shaped the sounds of a number or area bands over the years. Wayne Martin was born in Atlanta and exposed to traditional music as a child. He took up the fiddle in high school after hearing Jim Collier and Bill Mansfield's string band perform. Older musicians have mentored him over the past decades and have greatly shaped the repertoire and style in which he plays. He and Margaret are also interested in blues music. Wayne is currently director of the Folklife division of the North Carolina Arts Council.
Dwight Rogers and Gail Gillespie, both born in Florida, have also been playing old-time music since the late 60s-early 70s. Gail, editor of the traditional music magazine, The Old Time Herald, took up guitar and banjo in high school. Her recording, Travelin' Shoes, features the Haw River Reelers on some cuts. Dwight was drawn to old-time music when he heard it on a trip to Galax while he was in school. In addition to being a great old time musician, Dwight is an associate professor of elementary education at UNC Chapel Hill, and is the co-author of 5 books focusing on the challenges of beginning teachers.
