THE OLD-TIME SQUARE DANCE

The Slate Mountain Ramblers

The Slate Mountain Ramblers, from Ararat Virginia, will be our guest performers for the Old-Time Square Dance on April 17, 2004. The Slate Mountain Ramblers, featuring fiddler Richard Bowman, have long been a staple both at fiddler's conventions and dances in the NW North Carolina and SW Virginia area. Fueled by Richard's energetic fiddling, and backed up by daughter Marcia's clawhammer banjo and wife Barbara's slap bass, the Slate Mountain Ramblers provide the perfect elements for a square dance; good rhythm and great old-time tunes. The band was also one of the featured bands on "Blue Ridge Holiday: The Breaking Up Christmas Story" by Paul Brown, broadcast on NPR stations.

Dance organizer Debbie Leonard commented, "The whole family is musical. Richard has won more ribbons than he can count from fiddler's conventions, and Marcia is following in his footsteps. In addition to being fine musicians, Marcia and Barbara have won many dance contests with their flatfooting and clogging. We are lucky that they were able to come play for the dance."
