THE OLD-TIME SQUARE DANCE

The Appalachian Mountain Girls

Rita Scott formed the Appalachian Mountain Girls in 1994 in her native Ashe County, N.C. Members have changed over the years, but Rita’s fiddling has always anchored the band’s true mountain sound. The girls’ favorite place to play is a good old time square dance.

Rita lives in Lansing, N.C. and learned fiddle from Albert Hash and Thornton Spencer. She is a graphic artist for McFarland and Co. book publishers. She is the mother of three and a recent proud and happy grandmother.

Amy Boucher of Independence, Va. is the band’s guitarist, though she is also skilled at several other instruments. She is editor of The Gazette newspaper in Galax, Va. and the mother of two college students.

Katherine Higgins of Mouth of Wilson, Va. plays bass in the band and is also a fine guitarist. She is a student at Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

Lynn Worth of Sparta, N.C. plays banjo with the Appalachian Mountain Girls and other instruments with her church band. She is a freelance editor and writer.
